The ISCWSA error model framework helps decode, categorize, and quantify both systematic and random survey tool errors in order to estimate wellbore positional uncertainty. This uncertainty is expressed as an Ellipsoid of Uncertainty (EOU) and provides a practical, standardized way to understand survey accuracy, assess collision risk, and support better decision-making in directional drilling operations..
JAE Sensors provides high-reliability motion sensing and directional sensor technology used in MWD, LWD, and wireline applications. Their directional modules are designed for downhole integration and combine calibrated accelerometer, magnetometer, and electronics packages to support accurate inclination, azimuth, and toolface measurements in harsh drilling environments. This session will highlight how sensor quality, calibration, temperature capability, and long-term reliability directly impact survey accuracy, correction workflows, and the confidence operators have in wellbore positioning data.
Survey corrections account for magnetic and positional errors caused by Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) interference and mechanical sag effects created as the BHA bends under gravity. By identifying and correcting for these influences, the corrected survey data provides a more accurate representation of the wellbore position, reduces the Ellipsoid of Uncertainty (EOU), and improves confidence in survey calculations used for directional drilling and wellbore placement.
Survey management plays a critical role in improving wellbore placement by validating survey data, applying the appropriate corrections, identifying potential errors, and reducing positional uncertainty throughout the drilling process. In this class, attendees will learn how effective survey management connects MWD data quality, error modeling, correction workflows, and subsurface interpretation to support safer decisions, reduce collision risk, improve confidence in the Ellipsoid of Uncertainty, and deliver more accurate wellbore positioning from planning through execution.
